This ship’s model was once a showpiece at the headquarters of the Dutch East India Company in Middelburg. In 1849 ownership of the by-then highly dilapidated model was transferred to the Naval Ministry, which had it restored. The model represents a characteristic type of East Indiaman built in Zeeland in the early 18th century. Although the model bears a name and year of construction, there is no mention of a Merkurius from 1747 in company records.

Description

Gepolychromeerd, getuigd spantmodel. De bewapening ontbrak reeds in 1858; zestig geschutpoorten zijn verdeeld over drie dekken. Het kleine galjoen heeft een gehelmde man als schegbeeld. Gewrongen spiegel en hol wulf met vier poorten. Het hek heeft twee verdiepingen en is uitbundig versierd met snijwerk van krulwerk en dierfiguren; het wapen van Zeeland en dat van Middelburg zijn erop aangebracht. De zijgalerijen, versierd met krulwerk, zijn klein en gesloten. Recht roer met vierkante roerkoning, stuurwiel op het halfdek. Op het model zijn drie ankers, een spil, een kombuis, scheepsbel en twee pompen aangebracht. De zeeg loopt naar voren en naar achteren op, twee dubbele barkhouten en één reehout, rond onderwaterschip. Het driemasttuig is voorzien van alle zeilen; de ezelshoofden zijn rond en de bezaansroede heeft een halve bezaan.

Explanatory note

De spiegel is duidelijk een overgangsvorm van platte naar gewrongen spiegel, iets lomper dan de latere gewrongen spiegel omdat de rantsoenhouten nog geen draaispanten zijn; dit schijnt een typische Zeeuwse vorm te zijn geweest in de vroege 18de eeuw. Er is geen Merkurius uit 1747 van de Oost-Indische Compagnie bekend. Het model heeft als pronkmodel in het Oost-Indisch Huis te Middelburg gestaan tot het in 1849 in verwaarloosde staat door het Departement van Financiën aan het Departement van Marine werd overgedragen. Het werd toen door Petrus van der Loo te Rotterdam gerestaureerd. Het tuig is in 1913 herzien.
