This young woman carved in profile and in extremely low relief is Eleonora of Aragon. That she faces left suggests that she is unmarried. With its glorifying inscription – ‘divine Eleonora’ – the portrait may have been a gift from Ercole I d’Este, the Duke of Ferrara, whom she married in 1473.
