The Singel near the Lutheran Church in Amsterdam

Vincent van Gogh, 1885

Having saved money diligently, Van Gogh travelled to Amsterdam to visit the then newly opened Rijksmuseum. There he saw paintings by Frans Hals and Rembrandt. He was so impressed by their loose brushwork that he painted this view of the Singel. He had brought a small panel and a painting box with him and immortalized this view with quick strokes of paint.
