The Sacrifice of Abraham

Rembrandt van Rijn (mentioned on object), 1655

God never intended to deprive Abraham of his only son, but simply to test his faith. Rembrandt depicted the horrifying scene in a highly intimate manner. The unshackled Isaac does not put up a struggle. Abraham covers his son’s eyes to spare him the sight of the knife he wields. An angel steps in just in the nick of time.
