Inspired by what he had seen in Germany, in 1927 Willem Gispen introduced tubular metal furniture in the Netherlands with an exhibition of ‘artless products.’ His factory in Rotterdam supplied chiefly manufacturers and offices. In the early 1930s he also tried to conquer the private market. He combined ‘cool’ chrome and steel with ‘warm’ materials, such as mahogany.
