Singel

From the series Then and now

Here, the Amsterdam painter Eduard Alexander Hilverdink (1846–1891) captures the city’s Singel canal, which flows from the IJ waterway behind Central Station to here, and then on to Muntplein. The canal forms the boundary of the medieval city centre. Herengracht, or ‘Gentleman’s Canal’, was built parallel to Singel.
